Have you ever been in total darkness? Without light, what surrounds us can be fearful and very dangerous. The bible teaches us that the world in which we live is in ruled by dark-ness. What does this mean? Simply, when we were separated from the presence of God, we were placed in a world in which sins abides, Romans 3: 23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Where sin abides and thrives there is darkness. It is a darkness that reveals the absolutely worst characteristics of mankind. No list of sins found in the Holy Scriptures is flattering to any individual characterized by these sins. Yet at one time we have all found ourselves characterized by this darkness. Darkness is also a place of death. It is a place of despair, destruction, and eventually doom. Why? Because we have been separated by the source of life, God our Creator.
What is the answer to the problem of darkness? The answer can be found in the proclama-tion that Jesus made concerning Himself, John 8: 12 "Then Jesus spoke to them again, say-ing, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." He is the Light that overpowers the darkness by reconciling us to the source of life, God our Creator, Romans 5: 9 - 11 "Much more then, having now been jus-tified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were ene-mies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." This Light not only dispels the darkness, but it shines as a guide to lead us to the place that we truly belong, alongside God for an eternity, John 14: 6 "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." This Light also brings us hope. An earnest expectation that we can overcome and escape the darkness that is found in this world. We can overcome the darkness in our own character through a new life that is given to us through Jesus the Light, Romans 6: 4 "Therefore we were bur-ied with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." We also can es-cape the darkness of this sinful world by the knowledge of the word of Jesus that guides us by its Light, II Peter 1: 2 - 4 "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." May we strive diligently to give our life to the Light and to walk in the Light as He is in the Light
